The Story

High up in Australia's eucalyptus trees, Mahmi the koala and her joey Garbaa spend most of their time wedged between two branches, munching on leaves and taking long naps. But when a new road is constructed through the forest, the koalas find themselves separated from their home tree. Loud bulldozers and trucks rumble down the road, making it too dangerous to cross. With the road running as far as they can see, Mahmi and Garbaa begin their journey to find a safe passage home. Along the way, their animal friends help them discover there is hope for a future where they can always find a way back home.

Koala Crossings’ inspiring story, written by Carrie Hasler and illustrated by Barbara Ball, is published by the award-winning San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Press in association with Blue Sneaker Press. Through these publishing efforts, we seek to inspire children and adults to care about wildlife, the natural world, and conservation. The story teaches children about the importance of being kindhearted and having hope, and also includes fun facts about koalas.

32-page, hardcover book. Recommended for ages 4-8 years.
